When I was working in my studio at Boston University, I ran out of canvasses. So, I began going through all the unfinished paintings I had had in storage from graduate school. The "backwards" horse-like figure was an oddball, unfinished idea. I decided to just paint it up and see what happened.
The result was "Kilim". A kilim is a particular type of woven rug. We had two of them in our family home in Cleveland, a gift from my grandparents in Bulgaria. Now, after living in Bulgaria for two years, much of the embroidery and woven textiles I had lived with, began to infuse my work.
Another image was the rusalka. There are many folk tales about the rusalka and she can change images or stories, depending on where you are. Essentially, she is a Slavic folk tale image. According to some sources in Bulgaria, she is half woman and half bird, but can change forms and shapes at will. I began to paint her, while in graduate school. In later paintings, such as those below, she turns into a bird, sometimes capped with a crown.
All works are oil on canvas.
