"Huntress and the Seventh King", diptych 2023 |
I painted these pictures on the inside of wooden box covers.
In the Netherlands, this type of box is called a "letterdoos", meaning a box of letters. They are not deep, but rather like two lids hinged together, containing letters for children to learn to spell. I acquired them from an elementary school scheduled for demolition.
Hmmm, one day, I thought.
Considering the fact that my box supply was obviously very limited and the shallow depth of the inside cover provided a built-in frame, I felt they should be different, special, "icon-like".
However, these portraits are not meant to be icons. They are meant to be story-like, with kings, sentinels, a huntress, a true-blue soul and a companion.
