"those strange words left no traces, and all is silent..." |
Out of the blue, and often, rather suddenly, I stop what is going on in the studio and make figurative works on paper. I’ve done this on and off for years. It can be a sharp 180 degree shift in content and visual experience. Two polar opposites. It’s an about-face, like a pendulum swing.
In this case, it began with acquiring a stack of paper by chance, and the excitement of working with fallen feathers and pots of homemade walnut ink. The stepping stones for “The Gatherings” were laid long ago. The accumulation of figures, layered densities of entities and sounds of souls, have appeared along the way, but now, I would be shifting gears.
I wanted to be at the middle of the pendulum swing, at the point where a clarification of many things, even polar opposites, might come together.
Within this series of works on paper, there are connections between you, me, families, generations and the spirits of those around us.
